Article in “Adoptive Families” Magazine

Third time’s a charm . . . Here is a link to my most recent article in Adoptive Families magazine. I am indebted to editor Eve Gilman for believing in my ideas and helping me see them through to completion.

I do this for my children and hope that my meager words in this most respected publication will mean as much to them as they do to me.

Thank you to Don, too, for the accompanying photo–it, like you, is one that I will treasure forever.

  1. LOVED your article in AF magazine! we are starting our 2nd adoption and are open to race. it gave me a new outlook on the subject of hertiage and ethnic background. thank u

  2. Thank you, Cara. Congratulations on your first and soon-to-be second adoption! It is a journey like no other. Best to you and your family.

  3. Samantha, I saw your article in Adoptive Families. Well written about a great topic. A fellow AF writer, I am a caucasian parent of an adopted Asian child. Now our family has all these unexpected labels…blended, multicultural…I wouldn’t trade it, of course, but it’s nice to hear how you tactfully respond. You have three adorable sons.

  4. Thank you so much! If it’s okay with you (and you, too, Cara), I have added links to your blogs on mine. Wishing you well.

  5. Just read your article and had to send you a note of gratitude! We struggle with the same issue all of the time (me as the stay at home mom, more often). Our adopted 2 year old daughter is half African American but looks like a well tanned Caucasian- especially with her two Caucasian parents! I too, have heard so many times the comments about sunscreen or her tan, and I struggle with blowing it off or honestly sharing our private information.

It was such a weight off my shoulders to read your article and know that I am not alone in feeling this way, and struggling with knowing what is right for my daughter.

Thank you for sharing with all of us! (Hey, let me know if you ever find the magic answer.)
