How many days do you get to walk through a gate and time travel back to the reign of Renaissance king Richard X? And how many days do you get to see a jousting match, shake hands with a gargoyle, ride a pony through a pine forest, watch someone, after careful admonitions, eat fire, and receive a personal invitation to a “freak show”? Not many, that’s for sure. And today’s trip to King Richard’s Faire offered just that–and much more. Don and Mary got up on stage and danced with gypsies, Edgar communed with a mystic and his black cat, a townsperson bowed before Oscar, and by the end of the afternoon, both boys had been knighted. They have the swords and shields to prove it. It was a beautiful day in the middle of a shady 80-acre pine forest–a feast for the senses that may necessitate this becoming an annual tradition.
